Should we care about homeless people?

There are approximately two million homeless in America. They are divided into two different categories. There are ones who choose to be homeless, and then there are those who don’t have a choice. People are not realizing that the numbers of homeless are going up every year. Homeless people may seem scary, but you have to realize that they are humans just like us, they need someone to listen to their experiences. I think we should care about the homeless, they need our help.

As mentioned, there are two types of homeless people; the difference is one who chooses to be homeless, and the one who doesn’t have a chose. You are probably thinking, why would anyone want to be homeless? Orange County Sheriffs Offices says,”Most homeless people just want to live and not be bothered by other people.” That is just one of the reasons why they choose to be homeless. The other type is those who don’t get a choice. It maybe because of their disability or they couldn’t make their medical bills, so they were put out on the streets.

According to “Homelessness.” Almanac of Policy Issues, they say “anywhere around 2 million people are homeless in America.” That includes men, women and even children. On the website Nation Coalition for the homeless says “At lest 1.3 million children and 150,000 veterans are homeless during the year. When people become homeless they can feel hopeless, alone and unhappy. This may lead to drug abuse or even crime. Homeless people need us, they need to know that there is someone out there that cares about them.

Dominic Mapstone says “In most shelters, there are so many rules. I’ve found that when working with a person just coming out of homelessness, it’s really important to throw out those one-size-fits-all rules and start with what he feels comfortable with, to focus on his needs and experiences.” Mapstone is saying that homeless people need us, they need someone to just listen to them.

According to Coalition for the Homeless. Web, it has a graft that shows shelters in New York from the year of 1983 to 2009. In 1983, homeless shelters had approximately fifteen-thousand homeless, and then in 2009 it there was little over ten-thousand in shelters. As can be seen, it’s getting worst every year. We need to make a change today.

National Alliance to End Homelessness list the” Ten Essentials how to end homelessness.” We need to start getting involved. As was mentioned, there are people that don’t want help but there are those that are begging for us. I believe we should care about the homeless. Its time to make a difference in someones life. The Volunteer Family: Homeless. website had a quote from Booker T. Washington that said,” If you want to lift yourself up, lift up someone else.”

Being a helping hand.

Being a helping hand.

On April 5th my mom and I went with my church to the Dream Center to hand out food to the homeless. It was a great experience,  I believe everyone should do something that gets there focus off themselves and help someone else.  When i was there I felt the pain and suffering these people were going through just by watching them,  but at the same time they were so happy to see us and so grateful to have a plate of food. I have some pictures that I take during this event.

This picture puts a smile on my face. This man told us how blessed he felt when we come and bring them food.

We served spagetti and salad with homemade dressing. They loved it!

Just like the little girl in the movie, there may be millions and millions of homeless people here on this earth, but to each person you hand food to or give money to, you are making a difference one life at a time.
